What Kind of Bar Mitzvah Dance Music Should You Choose?
![]() |
A bar mitzvah is both a religious ceremony and a party which celebrates the passage from childhood to adulthood for Jewish males. In addition to a Sunday morning synagogue ceremony, there is a big party which is similar in nature to a wedding reception. There are gifts, food, favors and of course, dancing. You will need to think about what kind of bar mitzvah dance music you want to have. Of course, this also applies if you are planning for a bat mitzvah which is the equivalent of the bar mitzvah for Jewish females.
Most parents hire a DJ for their child's bar mitzvah. Sometimes, the DJ acts as a master of ceremonies and leads the festivities by making announcements and getting the crowd in a party mood. The best way to go when choosing music is to think variety. You don't want to go for one particular genre of music, but rather many different types of music. Another consideration is new versus old music. You want to strike a nice balance between golden oldies and Top 40 songs. If your son likes a particular type of music, be sure to include it as appropriate. Of course, you don't want to play death metal or gangsta rap at a bar mitzvah! Use discretion and good judgment when selecting tunes for your bar mitzvah.
Another thing you'll want to balance is the fast and slow songs. You want to have mostly fast, upbeat tunes with a few slow songs for slow dancing thrown in. And, you'll want a song that expresses the jubilation and spirit of the occasion. For a bar mitzvah, one classic choice might be 'Let's Hear it For the Boy.' For a bat mitzvah, you might want to choose something like 'Isn't She Lovely.' Your DJ can help you come up with a great play list that will keep your guests dancing.
Any DJ worth their salt is going to be able to provide some examples of bar mitzvah dance music they've used in the past. You might be able to choose a tried and true play list from what they already have available. Of course, if you or the man of honor has a favorite song, be sure to request it. The trick to choosing great bar mitzvah music is to choose a good blend of different music genres.
