Bar Mitzvah Origins
The bar mitzvah is a ceremony and celebration which marks a 13 year old boy's transition from child to adult in the eyes of the Jewish religion. The exact definition is son of the commandment. This means that the child is considered an adult and is held accountable for his moral and spiritual actions. After this time, the young man can participate as an adult in various religious practices customary to the Jewish faith. Bar mitzvah origins date back to the Talmudic age. During this time boys of this age were called bar mitzvah. It wasn't until later that the term was used to describe a ceremony and celebration. Bar mitzvah history goes all the way back to the sixteenth century, as far as the modern type of ceremony is concerned.
The bar mitzvah is held on a Sunday morning at a synogogue. It includes a parents blessing after which the student reads from the Torah. The student may also read from the Haftarah, which is a section of the Torah attributed to the Prophets. The student will also give a customary speech that he has written with the help of a mentor or religious leader. Another important part of any bar mitzvah is the party. The party is much like a wedding reception in that there is food, party favors, dancing and presents.
The female equivalent to the bar mitzvah is the bat mitzvah. The words bat mitzvah mean daughter of the commandment. This occurs when a Jewish girl turns 12 years of age. Like a bar mitzvah, there are Torah readings, blessings, speeches and a great deal of celebration. The only difference is that the party theme, presents and guest list will be geared towards the preferences of a young woman rather than a young man. The bat mitzvah is not quite as old as the bar mitzvah, but it is no less special or significant.
It is important for students to understand bar mitzvah origins. Part of belonging to a religious community is understanding the history and heritage of your faith. Of course, most young adults preparing for their bar mitzvah will undergo extensive education with their rabbi for approximately six months to one year. During this time, the origins of the bar mitzvah will be studied.
